I saw a BTS video where they shot the models through plexiglass decorated with paint and wanted to give something similar a try. Continue Reading →

The past few months have been a complete blur. Very little sleep, an overload of work, and a collection of other misfortunes left me feeling completely down and exhausted this week, especially in regards to my work and my art. So I slept in, tore apart and reorganized my room, and curled up with my Wii remote to take a much needed Netflix vacation.
And I started feeling very sorry for myself. Frustrated about my financial situation. Frustrated about my discontent with my portfolio. Frustrated about my location. Frustrated by a long of list of what my friend Taylor would remind me are merely “first world problems.” Then I watched the movie Billy Elliot. For those who’ve never seen it, its story of an 11-year old boy, Billy, who quits boxing to pursue his passion for dance. Against the opposition of his father and brother, he works his ass off to excel at his craft, finally winning their approval and getting the chance to live his passion daily. And whats more, be accepted for it. I suppose you could consider it your usual movie about overcoming adversity, although more fantastically crafted than most. But what hit me hardest about the story, was realizing that the characters in these movies I most relate to…these people with an overwhelming passion to change their world and the world as a whole through their passion…work exceedingly hard. At the last moment on new years eve, my best friend Taylor Tracy and I decided to make a road trip to Kansas City. We were determined to ring in the new year in a different city as a tribute to our goal of traveling and being more spontaneous in the New Year…and to check some items off of our bucket lists.
We arrived in Kansas City with two minutes left till midnight…so we parked quickly and ran into the first bar we laid eyes on just in time for the last 60 second count down. Continue Reading →

I have been playing with the idea of doing some fashion shoots that could be more interactive in the digital world and came up with some pretty complicated concepts involving panoramas. So when I heard about the contest that www.Fstoppers.com was running, I figured this would be a good time to take a stab at a pretty basic one. We took two models, and shot them in a circle, repeating them in different outfits and styles so the resulting image is one never ending chain of the same two people sporting different looks.
Although the concept for it is pretty simplistic, it posed a lot of challenges and a lot of retouching work. Check out the final result of the panorama HERE . Read the full post to see more behind the scenes images from the shoot and how our submission ranked in the contest.

As my first entry to the www.Fstoppers.com behind the scenes contest I decided to make use of my recent obsession with desert photos. unfortunately, living in Nebraska and being the dead middle of winter, there’s not a lot of sand or desert within reach. Using my hollywood flats from a previous video set I created a beige room and filled it with sand. Continue Reading →

From a business perspective, I can understand how this may not be a smart post for me to write.
But I’ve never been much for business. I’m an artist.
I’ve been doing photography for four years now and it has saved me in more ways than one. I grew up being overweight.. feeling pretty alone and outcasted. I found comfort in food, books, and imagining what my life would be like if I could be pretty, or have a boyfriend. For the longest time, I thought all I had to offer the world was to just to loose weight, be an attractive girl, and be an amazing girlfriend to a boy who’d have me.
I hoped for it. Year after year I wished I had a boyfriend. I thought if I did that I’d feel whole. That I could find a way to be pretty on the outside, people would love me. But day after day, a boyfriend never came. I did a lot of things I really regret in search of that acceptance and I failed a lot of diets. I let myself get really unhealthy, I chose to believe a lot of bad things about myself, and I was always desperate to prove that I was someone worth loving…Even when that meant buying my friendships. behind the scenes:
I recently directed the music video “Ride Away” for my friend Rebecca Culhane. It was my first time building a set for a video and I was fortunate to have some help from a local high school student, Logan, who builds sets for plays. He built me 9 hollywood flats which ended up running around $180 dollars to make. Continue Reading →

behind the scenes:
I am the queen of waiting till the last second when it comes to my personal work. I feel like I wait all year for Halloween to come around so I can do all my Halloween themed shoot ideas…but every year without fail I find myself a few days away from Halloween without a single shoot to post for it. last night i did my first attempt at a truly high fashion photo shoot. i designed the outfits, Karah Linn modeled, Hillary Hubbell did hair, and Linda Miller did the makeup.
I pulled all the elements for the outfits together from different thrift stores round Omaha. I wanted to stick to a brown/creme/earth tone palette as far as the clothing went. To add extra color and pop I used a blue gel effect on the softbox to the left of Karah. Unfortunately our local camera store wasn’t open and I couldn’t purchase “actual gels” so I used some colored cellophane gift basket wrap from a local party store. I must say the results were awesome, and the blue was vibrant. And the large size of the cellophane made it easier to use with a softbox, Plus at less than $2 a roll and about 303284029 colors to choose from, they are definitely worth experimenting with!

did a photo shoot at sunset last night with the stunning Tori Tracy. we literally caught these photos in the last fifteen minutes before the light was completely gone. couldn’t have imagined more perfect tones for the background of the photos though. i made her dress out of a santa belt, trash bags, and a really cool bracelet from a local costume shop.

i’ve been working in photography for four years now. mentally, i always struggle to be proud of how far i’ve come from where i started….because i know where i still want to go. most days its hard to not be discouraged. disappointed that the world i can see so clearly in my head, i can’t translate into a photo yet.
i know that part of art is never being satisfied. i hope the day never comes where i feel like i have nothing left to learn… it seems if i did, id have nothing left to live for. but being SO passionate about the art i know i want to create…makes it harder for me to deal with a photo shoot or video shoot that doesn’t live up to how i imagined it. a light i can’t afford to buy, or a job i don’t love that i have to take to make ends meet. its hard to not feel like i’m failing myself…or people who chose to believe in me.
